Flotilla: An Open Alternative to Mighty Networks
Part of our guide to running an online community you actually own.
If you’re weighing an alternative to Mighty Networks, you probably like the idea of an all-in-one home for your community but aren’t sure about the price, the caps, or the fact that the whole thing lives on someone else’s platform.
If your core need is selling courses and paid memberships out of the box, Mighty is the stronger product. If your core need is owning your community, Flotilla is built for exactly that.
What Mighty Networks is, and what it’s good at
Mighty Networks is a proprietary, cloud-hosted, all-in-one platform for building paid online communities. From a single dashboard you get community spaces (feeds, chat, events), a built-in LMS for courses, memberships and paywalls, live streaming, and — on its top tier — branded native iOS and Android apps. It’s closed-source SaaS running on the company’s own infrastructure, with no self-hosting and no access to the code.
It’s a capable product:
- It’s all-in-one. Community spaces, courses, events, live streaming, memberships, and paywalls are one integrated product with nothing to assemble.
- Creator monetization works on day one. Paid memberships, course and bundle sales, and event tickets are all built in.
- No ads and no algorithmic feed. Mighty is funded by subscriptions and transaction fees, not attention.
- A mature community-management model. Roles are well developed: Network Host, Network Moderator, Space Host, and Space Moderator. Structure is organized through Spaces and Collections, and role names are customizable on higher tiers.
- Unlimited members on every plan, including the entry tier.
- Branded native apps and white-labeling are available (via the Mighty Pro tier) without commissioning custom app development.
- Reasonable data terms. Per its Terms of Use, hosts retain ownership of their content and their member email and contact list, and the company states it doesn’t sell personal data to third parties for its own marketing.
If turnkey course-selling and memberships are what you need, that list is a strong offer.
Where Mighty Networks falls short if you want to own your community
With an all-in-one platform, the vendor owns the infrastructure your community runs on. For organizers whose priority is ownership, portability, or keeping costs low, that shows up in a few concrete ways.
- It gets expensive, and a cut of every sale is permanent. The standard tiers run about $79/mo (Launch) and $179/mo (Scale), both billed annually, and Mighty Pro — the tier with branded apps and full white-labeling — is custom-priced and reported to run into the five figures per year. On top of the subscription, Mighty charges a transaction fee on every sale: 2% on Launch, 1% on Scale, 0.5% on Mighty Pro. Stripe and PayPal processing fees come on top of that. There’s also no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
- No self-hosting, and closed source. Your community and your course content live entirely on the vendor’s servers.
- Feature-gating and caps. Members are unlimited, but hosts and moderators are capped by tier (3 hosts and 10 moderators on Launch; 5 hosts and 15 moderators on Scale). Integrations (such as Zapier), API access, custom domains, white-labeling, and branded apps are pushed up to Scale or the Mighty Pro tier.
- Lock-in on the way out. You can export member emails to CSV and export your content, but you cannot transfer active paid subscriptions to another platform. Leaving means a manual, parallel-run migration over several weeks, and your members have to re-subscribe somewhere else.
- Deplatforming exposure. Because your community runs on Mighty’s platform under Mighty’s terms, a suspension or account termination takes it offline, even if you’re holding an exported copy of the data.
On Mighty you own your data, but you don’t own the platform. The hosting, the billing relationship, and your members’ logins all belong to Mighty Networks.
How Flotilla is different
Flotilla is a platform for building and running online communities — chat, voice, video, threads, and events with moderation tools — built on the open Nostr protocol, so the community you build is one you own.
That ownership is concrete:
- You can self-host. The relay software behind a Flotilla space (zooid) is free and open source. You can run it on a plain $11/month virtual server that you control, or on any provider you choose. See Self-Hosting a Space for the full walkthrough.
- Or host cheaply and skip the work. If you don’t want to run a server, Flotilla hosts your space free for small communities (up to 10 members), $5/month for up to 100 members with media, and $25/month for unlimited members. Using the Flotilla app and joining communities is always free. Costs land on the space owner, never on members.
- Your identity is yours. You sign in with a key you own rather than an account a company issues, and that identity works across Nostr apps. Because it isn’t locked to Flotilla, you’re much harder to deplatform. Keep a backup of your content, and your community and its history can move with you.
- No ads and no surveillance. Like Mighty, Flotilla runs no ads and has no algorithmic feed. It also isn’t a closed platform you can be evicted from, and there’s no business built on watching your members.
- Open source, top to bottom. The client is open source too.
If you need a branded, white-labeled app under your own name rather than Flotilla’s, the Branded plan on our pricing page starts at $300/mo. The Platform plan, from $6,000/mo, adds custom development, integrations, dedicated hosting and support. Together they’re the closest analog to Mighty Pro.

When Mighty Networks might be the better choice
Mighty Networks is the better pick when:
- Selling courses is central. You want an LMS, course and bundle sales, and paywalled memberships working on day one.
- Creator monetization is the point. Paid memberships, event ticketing, and built-in billing are core to your model, and you’d rather pay a subscription plus a transaction cut than wire up payments yourself.
- You want polished all-in-one convenience. You’d prefer a single vendor to handle community, courses, events, live streaming, and a branded native app, and you’re comfortable running entirely on that vendor’s platform.
- You value turnkey over ownership. If not owning the infrastructure and paying a perpetual cut of sales are acceptable trade-offs for never touching a server, Mighty delivers that well.
Flotilla is the better pick when owning your community, portability, and low or no cost matter more than built-in monetization, and when what you’re building is chat, voice, video, and events.
